The Gift of Preparation, by Marianne

I recently lost my Dad of 92 years. With his family by his side, he maintained his dignity and left this world on his terms despite us. Although we knew losing him would be painful, we had to come to terms with the fact that this was about honoring his wishes, not ours. Looking back, I feel immensely privileged to have been able to care for and advocate for him throughout his later years.

Over ten years ago, I sat down with my parents to have “the conversation.” At the time, they were both healthy and vibrant, and I realized I didn’t truly know their end-of-life wishes. Having worked as a nurse care manager, hospice nurse, and private caregiver, I’d seen families caught off guard in times of crisis, making difficult decisions in the midst of stress and grief. I wanted to avoid that for us by having the necessary, albeit uncomfortable, conversations to reduce any second-guessing when the time came.

The importance of advanced care planning cannot be overstated. Creating a living will and appointing a power of attorney are essential first steps. With my parents, we were able to discuss their specific expectations and values so that, later, decisions could be made with confidence. I’m so grateful we took that time.

Make a checklist of the following items to ensure that your loved ones end of life is quality of life:

  • Living Will

  • Advanced Directives

  • Power Of Attorney-Durable

  • Burial arrangements

  • Personal wishes and goals

  • Personal care plan

  • Choosing a care team for end of life care

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to discuss your values, wishes, and goals with your loved ones and clinicians. If you’re not sure where to begin, we are here to help.

Bringing balance to family life,

Marianne and Vickie
